What is the reality of Patanjali’s claim of Corona Virus Vaccine?

The whole world is fighting with the virus Covid-19 and India being at the 4th position in terms of number of cases which is 456,115 and in terms of number of active cases which is 183,058. In amidst of all these how would you feel when you hear the news of Corona Vaccine being discovered and is 100% successful? That is a pretty good news. Isn’t it? Something like the same were claimed by yoga guru Baba Ramdev. Patanjali with officials from National Institute of Medical Science Jaipur at a press conference in Haridwar on 23rd June 2020 claimed that ran a trail on 50 people from which 69% recovered in 3 days while the others recovered in 7 days. And the fatality rate is 0%.

Patanjali had made a kit which contains three medicines Coronil, Swasari and Anu Tel. Swasari and Anu Tel were sold by Patanjali earlier. Swasari is meant for curing cough, cold while anu tel is meant for betterment of lungs by applying in nostrils. The new inclusion is Coronil. How is that made and what are the substances being used in that? Baba Ramdev clarifies that Coronil consists of Giloy, Aswagandha and Tulsi extracts whose combination boosts up the immunity and helps control bood pressure, heartbeat.

Dr Balbir Tomar from NIMS, Jaipur stated that they had some 100 patients and they ran a trial of Corona Kit on 50 patients. And all of them were with mild symptoms. Baba Ramdev also stated that they took permission from Central Trial Registration of India (CTRI). But any pharmaceutical company without the certificate from Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) cannot sell medicine in the Indian market. When searched in the website of CDSCO, there are many Patanjali products listed for sale but there is no mention of Coronil Kit. Neither Baba Ramdev spoke anything about that in the press conference.

From past couple of days, there are claims about effectiveness of corona medicine, but they too are effective on mild symptoms patient. One such name is Favipiravir.

There are no reports from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) regarding Coronil kit by Patanjali. Ayush Ministry also did not have any insights on the same and the ministry has asked for all the details of the composition of the medicine and the trial reports in details.

According to Drugs and Magic Remedies 1954, false claims in the market is a crime. If medicines are being sold with false claims, then there is law to prosecute the respective company. In this regard, Patanjali also should be prosecuted. And if its effective then the whole world should be benefitted by the same.

My View – False claims should not be made by any such big giants in the country. And if any such thing happens, there should be proper actions taken as per the law. Law is same for every company.
